ABSTRACT

On the experience of developing and applying building regulations by the UK (pp. 3-6)

IBST’s Journal

This paper summarizes the content presented at the seminar  “Application of building regulations - experience by the United Kingdom” co-organized on March 20, 2008 by the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology (IBST) and the UK embassy to Vietnam in Hanoi. It covers the related aspects of the above matters such as: principles and organization for developing a building regulations, responsibilities of BRAC (Building Regulations Advisory Committee), basis for proposing main contents of the regulation, receiving and treating opinions, comments from key stakeholders, private citizens, professional experts, recommendation to Minister about the regulation,.. in order to get a good building regulation. The paper also presents experience by the UK in convincing the industry to accept and comply with the building regulations.

Practical use of concrete stress blocks in design standards (pp. 7-11)

Dr. Nguyen ngoc ba

For practical design purpose, most of design standards provide simplified concrete stress blocks to be used instead of the complex stress-strain curve that can represent the curve obtained from testing of concrete. Although different shapes of concrete stress blocks are provided by different standards, only one that design engineers concern, the others may be used by other purposes. This paper introduces different concrete stress blocks provided in advance design standards and discusses the practical use of such blocks.

Studying and applying optimal parameters of the TMD-N absorber for inverted pendulum type to the damping of the water tower oscillation (pp. 12-20)

MEng. Nguyen duy chinh
In [10] Khong Doan Dien and Nguyen Duy Chinh investigated the vibration of inverse - pendulum system with the TMD damper. These results are applied to simulate numerically for the articulated tower in the ocean. In some cases, the amplitude of oscillation of inverse - pendulum system of with the TMD damper increases when compared to the one of inverse - pendulum system of with no TMD and due to the random choice of TMD parameters. In the paper, the authors investigate to choose the optimal parameters of the TMD-N in order to stamp oscillation of inverse - pendulum system and application of these results for damping the oscillation of water tower.

Zoning the geological condition of Hanoi urban area for planning the area burying hygienically solid wastes (pp. 21-25)

A/Prof. Dr. Sc. Tran Manh Lieu, BA. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Eng. Nguyen chi quyet

This paper introduces the  result of the research theme on zoning Hanoi land area according to the integrated characteristics of geological conditions  for planning the area to be used to burry hygienically the solid wastes and the corresponding calculation results. The analytic hierarchy process by Thomas Saaty was applied to the zoning work. Results of the zoning work is the map that evaluates the favorable level for selecting the area suitable for burying hygienically solid wastes.

Features of design for restoring timber structures of monument (pp. 26-31)

Dr. Tran Minh Duc

It is very complicated for calculation/analysis of  timber structures in the conservation and restoration projects of old timber monuments because the nature of joints between timber elements (mainly the tenons) have been changed with the time due to the deterioration of the timber. It is not only difficult in assessing the behavior of old timber structures but also in selecting the new types of joints between the old parts and the new ones of timber elements.
In this paper, the author presents some test results applied to timber elements for assessing and selecting the joint types suitable for connecting old part s of timber elements to the new ones in restoring old timber monuments.

Studying the influence of blast furnace slag content on the sulphate resistance of cement stone (pp. 32-35)

MEng. Luu thi hong

Sulphate resistance cements have been researched and applied to special building projects on the world long time ago. This study aims at  investigating by experiment the expansibility occurring of slag cement after being immersed in a sulphate solution. The ordinary portland cement (OPC) was partially substituted, respectively by:  0%, 20%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70% of ground blast furnace slag by weight. The slag cements were exposed to a solution containing 352 moles of Na2SO4 per m3. The result  of this investigation shows that the content of  SO3 of slag has an important role with regard to the sulphate resistance of slag cement.

The orientation of effective solutions for design and operation of the central air-conditioning system of high-rise buildings (pp. 36-40)

Dr. Vu Van Dai, Eng. Doan Van Dong, BA. Nguyen Quyet chien

Energy saving is one of the important objectives in this century for sustainable development and environment protection. With regard to high-rise buildings, saving energy for the air-conditioning system has been paid much attention to. In this paper, the authors present some basic principles, requirements and feasible solution applicable to design and operation of the central air-conditioning system for the purpose of saving electric energy.

Technical-economical effectiveness of using total station Trimble 5602 and GPS Trimble R3 to monitor the displacement of building structures (pp. 41-45)

Eng. Le Van Hung
In this paper, the author presents the ability to combine applying the total station and the Global Positioning System (GPS) to the monitoring of the roof truss displacement of important buildings that require a high monitoring accuracy, particularly the technical-economical effectiveness of this combination method in comparison with the common method (the traditional one). The combination application of these surveying instruments should be widely disseminated and established as a procedure for favourable applying to large-span space steel truss structures.
Rational  solution for lateral displacement monitoring of bridges with short lengths spanning over rivers  with geodetic method (pp. 46-53)
Eng.
Tran Ngoc Dong
In this paper, the author analyses the three ways usually applied to monitor the lateral displacement with surveying methods, namely: traditional method, GPS method, and the combined method, applying total station together with GPS technology. By comparing the strong points and weak points of the three ways, the author would like to show that the combined method, applying total station together with GPS technology is the best one for monitoring lateral displacement of bridges with short lengths spanning over rivers. In fact, this methos also bring in high technical-economical effectiveness that should be widely applied to surveying work.
