Some basic technical requirements for household shelter in Singapore (pp.3-9)

Since May 1998 a household shelter shall be required for every new house or every apartment in a new building according to the Civil Defense Shelter Act of Singapore. For apartments in a multiple stories building, either a household shelter included inside the apartment or a storey shelter used for all apartments in a storey shall be arranged. This paper introduces some basic technical requirements for household shelter with illustration from one of the projects the author has been involved in the design in Singapore.
The simulation model of liquid storage tank for seismic response analysis (pp.10-14)

EC8.4 is the 4th part of Eurocode 8 which covers the seismic design of structures such as: silos, tanks and pipelines. This part has been developed since 2006 and it includes general principles of instructions, regulations and appendices for reference that are not specific instructions required to be applied. For example, the appendix A gives guidelines of earthquake response analysis for tanks and specifies that the selection of the procedure, the algorithm, the earthquake response analysis model depends on the designer and this appendix only serves as suggestions for application. In order to clarify the choice of analysis model for liquid storage tanks, this paper presents one of the currently popular models that is selected and suggested by EC8.4 - the model proposed by Haroun in 1983.

This paper presents an approach to assess reliability of structures based on possibility – probability transformation (from fuzzy quantity of safety margin to probability density function) and to establish the formula to calculate reliability of structures when fuzzy number is triangular. The proposed formula is compared with area ratio formula when fuzzy number is symmetric triangular.

The article describes a method of determining the internal forces and displacements of flat cycloid arch under vertical concentrated loads by the minimum potential energy method. By this method, a function has been established for considering 2 cases: the axial force and the bending moment.
A study on producing cement-based/cementitious capillary crystalline waterproofing paint in laboratory and its applications in hydraulic constructions (pp.24-28)

The paper presents an investigation on the selection of materials and technologies for producing cementitious capillary crystallization waterproofing paint in Vietnam. This type of paint has high compressive strength, abration resistance, and good adhesion to concrete surfaces and water tightness. The quality of the manufactured product can be compared with similar imported paints, promising effective coating for waterproofing applications in hydraulic constructions in Vietnam.
The influence of confining pressure to the behavior of granular material in triaxial compression test (pp.29-32)

In soil mechanics, the mechanical behavior of the grains of irregular size and shape has been studied. The mechanical characteristic curve for these grains is almost smooth and friction on the contact surface of the particles is almost steady. However, when replacing the grains with a uniform size and shape grains (sample material), the curve is no longer smooth and friction is no longer stable. This article analyzes the instability sliding of saturated granular materials in drained compression test.
Research on the application of GPS techology on the super high-rise buildings construction (33-37)

Determination of the limit for application of local geodetic coordinate system in engineering survey (pp.38-41)

In order to use the local topocentric coordinate system x, y, z (or N, E, U) appropriately, the deformation range of length and horizontal angular represented from the ellipsoid on the horizontal plane of the local topocentric coordinate system should be examined. This paper presents the method for determination of the availability range of the local topocentric system for geodetic work and proposes the formula for calculation of the horizontal angular deformity correction.
